Critical Mass Addis Ababa
Critical Mass originated in 1992 in San Francisco; by the end of 2003, it was held in over 300 cities worldwide, and today, it can be assumed that Critical Mass is held monthly in more than 1000 cities globally! Now, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, is part of this movement happening every last Friday of the month (Gregorian Calendar)!
Critical Mass is a direct action in which people meet at a set location and time and travel as a group through their neighborhoods on bicycles or other non-motorized devices like scooters and skates. Egre Menged Impact, Addis Mountain Biking Group and Anbesa Bike Ride partnered with other local bicycle groups and clubs to create a CRITICAL MASS version in Ethiopia. CRITICAL MASS ADDIS ABABA was launched in December 2022, more than 40 cyclists attended the event and covered 15 km of bicycle ride in a group. The event’s main objective is to cover a short distance and not race on the streets.
CRITICAL MASS ADDIS ABABA celebrates cycling, encourages communities to use their bicycles, reclaims the roads for bicycle and non-motorized use, engages decision-makers to understand the practice of cycling in the city, and creates awareness among other (motorized) road users for safety and co-existence.
CRITICAL MASS ADDIS ABABA is an interactive and fun movement where anyone with a bicycle, e-bike, scooter, or skates can join. JOIN US every last Friday of the month on the roads! See less
